1. Where each sound goes on the cut

SoundPlace itFor
WhooshStart it a few frames before the cut, so its loudest part lands on the cut.cuts, fast pans, text flying in
SwooshSame as a whoosh; it is shorter, so it suits quick zooms and small graphics.zooms, lower thirds
RiserEnd it on the frame of the reveal, and let the reveal carry an impact.build-ups, before a drop or a title
ImpactOn the first frame of the reveal or title; trim the tail if the next line starts.title slams, the end of a riser
BraamOn the title frame, under the music.trailer-style openings
PopOn the frame the caption, sticker or emoji appears.captions, stickers, list items
Record scratchOn the freeze frame, with the music cut at the same frame.comic stops: “wait, what?”
GlitchAcross a glitch transition, the same length as the effect.digital errors, tech intros

Each sound's page has several versions to compare. More in the transition, cartoon and crowd categories, for laughs and applause.

2. Import into Resolve

  1. Download the files. Keep your effects in one folder, such as SFX next to the project media, so a moved project still finds them.
  2. On the Edit page, drag the files from Finder or Explorer into the Media Pool, or use File → Import → Media. A bin named SFX keeps them apart from footage.
  3. Drag a clip from the Media Pool onto an audio track under the shot. With snapping on (N), it snaps to the playhead, so park the playhead on the cut first.

3. Give effects their own track

Right-click an audio track header and choose Add Track, then rename it SFX. With effects on one track, under dialogue and music, you can turn them all up or down at once on the Fairlight page's mixer, mute them to check the voice alone, and see every effect at a glance.

4. Set the level

  • Under the voice: an effect should be heard, not cover a word. Play the cut with the dialogue and lower the effect until the line stays clear.
  • One clip: drag the clip's volume line down, or set Volume in the Inspector.
  • Many clips at once: select them, right-click, Normalize Audio Levels, and give them the same target so no whoosh jumps out.
  • A tail that runs into the next line: drag the fade handle at the clip's end, or trim it.

Questions

Can I use these sounds in a monetized YouTube video?

Yes. Every library sound is CC0 1.0: monetized videos, client work and ads, with no credit needed.

How many can I download for free?

20 MP3 downloads a day, with or without a free account; WAV and ZIP packs come with a purchase. A download pack unlocks WAV, unlimited library downloads, API and MCP use, and ZIP packs for 30 days from payment.

Doesn't Resolve come with sound effects?

Blackmagic offers a free Fairlight Sound Library as a separate download, searchable from Resolve's Sound Library panel. These files are an addition to it: bring them in through the Media Pool as in step 2.

WAV or MP3?

MP3 is free and Resolve imports it, but it can add a few milliseconds of silence at the start, so check a whoosh against the frame you cut on. WAV starts exactly on the first sample; it comes with the download pack ($9.90 for 30 days, one payment).

Does this work in the free version of DaVinci Resolve?

Yes. Importing, the volume line, fades and Normalize Audio Levels are all in the free version.

The same whoosh on every cut sounds repetitive. What helps?

Use two or three different whooshes from the whoosh page and alternate them, and vary their level a little. Each family page has several versions to choose from.
