Steam AI disclosure for sound effects
By flreey · Checked against Steam's and itch.io's pages on
SFXMint sounds are made with an AI audio model, the free library and the sounds you make in AI Studio alike. If your game ships them, Steam and itch.io both expect you to say so. It takes a few sentences, and it is separate from the licence: CC0 lets you use the sounds without credit, it does not change what a store asks you to disclose.
What Steam asks
The Content Survey you fill in on Steamworks has a section on generative AI. It separates two kinds of content:
- Pre-generated: content made with AI tools during development that ships with the game and is consumed by players. Steam's own examples include artwork, sound, narrative and localization.
- Live-generated: content AI tools create while the game is running. For this, Steam also asks what guardrails stop it from producing illegal content.
Sound effects you download from SFXMint and put in your build are pre-generated. They would only be live-generated if your game called an AI service for new sounds while players play it. Steam says the section is not about using AI tools to work faster; it is about AI-made content players receive.
A disclosure to adapt
Say what is AI-made and what you did with it. Change the wording to match your game: which sounds, and how much you edited them.
Some sound effects in this game were generated with an AI audio model using SFXMint (sfxmint.com), then chosen, edited and mixed by our team. These sounds are dedicated to the public domain under CC0.
If only placeholders were AI-made and you replaced them before release, they do not ship, so there is nothing to disclose for them. Check your final build rather than your project history.
itch.io
itch.io's quality guidelines ask you to tag a project that contains material produced by generative AI, in the AI disclosure section of its edit page. Projects that disclose are listed on an “AI Assisted” browse page. For asset pages the rule is enforced strictly: an untagged one may be delisted. If you republish SFXMint sounds in a pack of your own, tag it.
Game jams
Many jams do not allow AI-generated audio at all, and some allow it only if you say so. Read the jam's rules before you start; if AI sounds are not allowed, make your sounds another way for that jam.
Questions
Do I have to disclose AI-generated sound effects on Steam?
Steam's Content Survey asks about content made with AI tools during development that ships with the game, and its examples include sound. If your game ships SFXMint sounds, describe that in the survey's AI section.
Are SFXMint sounds pre-generated or live-generated?
Pre-generated: they are made before you ship and play back as files. They become live-generated only if your game itself asks an AI service for new sounds while it runs.
Does CC0 mean I don't need to disclose?
No. CC0 is about rights: you may use the sound without paying or crediting anyone. Disclosure is a store rule about how the content was made, and applies whatever the licence.
